Shared Web Hosting

Shared hosting is the most popular options for people looking for UK web hosting. The term shared web hosting used to refer to many users sharing the resources on a web server. To keep end-user costs low, the web hosting provider will host many websites on one web server.

Due to the relatively low cost of the packages and ease of use, shared hosting is a popular choice for both individuals or small businesses.

For the majority of website owners, a shared hosting package will meet their needs.

How Does Shared Hosting Work?

Shared hosting plan works by allowing its users to share the resources of the server that the website is hosted upon. Depending on the plan that you select, the web hosting provider will allow you to use those server resources.

Most web servers can handle hundreds of websites, allowing web hosting providers to offer web hosting plans for an incredibly low price.

What are The Different Types of Shared Hosting?

You’ll often come across different types of names for shared hosting.

  • WordPress Hosting
  • Cloud Hosting
  • Blog Hosting
  • Small Business Hosting

While they all sound different, they generally all refer to the same thing — a lot more to do with marketing a lot less to do with the technology.

Is Shared Hosting Right For Me?

There is a lot of contradicting information out there suggesting who and who shouldn’t use shared hosting. The problem is the advice given is often poor and wrong.

Most websites can run perfectly fine on the right kind of shared hosting provider. When your site grows, be prepared to upgrade and not all shared hosting providers are the same.

If you are running a website which attracts lots of downloads or concurrent visitors, then shared hosting may not be for you. Shared hosting providers do and will place limitations on sites like this, as they affect other users on the server (remember its shared hosting).

Those that want or do send lots of emails will probably find that they have limitations placed on them with a shared hosting plan.

You should choose shared hosting if :

  • You are new or inexperienced to creating your own website
  • Your website is relatively new
  • You want to concentrate on running your website

Shared hosting is suitable for beginners because you can set up your website and run with it. There is no server configuration; you can install scripts (such as WordPress), email address, SSL certificates and practically everything to run your website with a click of a button.

Likewise, if your website is new chances are you won’t need a tremendous amount of resources. Therefore anything more than shared hosting is often not required.

As shared hosting is so easy to use compared to other forms of hosting, it allows you to focus on running your website. Shared hosting providers tend to offer a greater level of support as they understand how their servers are setup and configured. A good web hosting provider will provide you with a wealth of knowledge base articles on how to use their service.

Web Hosting Plans to Suit Your Budget

The good thing about shared hosting is you can always find a plan to suit your budget. You can pay as little as a couple of quid a month, up to £100+ for others.

The difference between cheaper plans and the more expensive plans will come down to the features and resources that you receive. More expensive plans will generally allocate higher server resources to you. Whereas the cheaper plans, these will be more limited.

Have a realistic budget in mind for the type of website you are looking to produce. Realistically you are not going a large website, with thousands of daily visitors on the cheapest shared web hosting plan. Being prepared to pay more will still allow you to stick to a shared hosting plan.

The shared hosting provider we use for this site (Krystal Hosting), allow us to provide an excellent example of this. Taking a look at the image below of their shared hosting plans:

Here you have their cheaper entry-level plan which provides you with everything you need to get your website setup. As you move up the packages, the features improve but so does the level of service.

You’ll notice, that the once you get mid-range web hosting packages not only do the resources increase, the number of sites per server decreases.

How Much Does UK Shared Hosting Cost?

Several months back, we conducted a small scale review on how much web hosting costs within the UK. Surprisingly we fond that UK web hosting as cheaper than its international counterparts with the average price of an entry-level UK shared hosting package being just £4.61/month (compared to £6.17/month for an international host).

What To Look for When Comparing Shared Hosting?

Often when comparing web hosting providers, we focus purely on the amount of web space and bandwidth that comes with the plan. However, looking a little deeper into some of the shared hosting packages a company offers provides you with a bit more insight into what you are paying for. Think about the features that are important to you:

  • Support –
  • Pricing –
  • Performance –

Services that offer (quality) support will cost more. Be prepared to pay more if this is important to you. Staffing is one of the highest costs to any business if you want quality support, you’ll need to be prepared to pay for it.

Pricing will always play a part in any purchasing decision. Just because something costs most doesn’t mean it is better. The flip-side to this trying to host a website (you know) is too large for an entry-level hosting plan is always going to end in disaster.

Performance is more important than ever. Google even use your site’s speed as a ranking factor for both its search results and ads. Having fewer sites per server provides you with the best performance in a shared hosting environment.

It is often frustrating to read when review sites tell their visitors this host is best for this or this host is best for that. The fact us what is best for one, is not always the best web host for another.

Why is Unlimited Hosting Bad?

Unlimited hosting often gets a bad press. You’ll often see articles stating you cannot get unlimited hard drives or bandwidth costs money. These are both true facts. However, the reason web hosting providers can and do is due to the fact bandwidth, and disk space is comparatively cheap. Web hosting providers know most users will never use that much.

The problem is that some web hosting providers are not always transparent what those resources are. They offer unlimited space, but then place limits on the number of Inodes – What is an Inode?

I have never found unlimited to be an issue. I’d probably liken unlimited buffet, yes technically you can eat as much as you like. But the restaurant doesn’t have unlimited food. Additionally, you’re probably not going to want or need to eat an unlimited amount (well unless you are Homer Simpson!). Web hosting is the same. You are going to use what you want with enough left for everyone else.

Which Hosting Provider Is Best For a WordPress Website?

Technically any hosting package is the best for a WordPress website. WordPress requires very little to run (PHP & MySQL), which comes with most shared hosting plans these days. Therefore you can run a WordPress website on almost any hosting plan. You may start to experience issues if you plan to install lots of plugins (especially poorly written ones).

There are web hosting providers that offer optimised or managed WordPress shared hosting. These plans are deployed on servers that have been optimised for WordPress. Built for WordPress packages, give you the best of both worlds. You have the cost benefits that come from shared hosting on a server that has been optimised for use with WordPress.
